After discussion with Bishop Toups, I am happy to announce that he has given permission for the tabernacle at St. Anne to be moved to its original position on the back altar in the center of the church.
It’s important to note that the Church documents foresee several places where the tabernacle can be placed. I have felt that the most fitting place is the center of the nave. As the depository of the Blessed Sacrament, it is my prayer that this move will emphasize the centrality of the Eucharist, as “the source and summit of the Christian life”, with all the lines of sight in the church being drawn to it.
Canon 938 of the Code of Canon Law says:
- º1. The Most Holy Eucharist is to be reserved regularly in only one tabernacle of a church or oratory.
- º2. The tabernacle in which the Most Holy Eucharist is reserved should be placed in a part of the church that is prominent, conspicuous, beautifully decorated, and suitable for prayer.
- º3. The tabernacle in which the Eucharist is regularly reserved is to be immovable, made of solid and opaque material, and locked so that the danger of profanation may be entirely avoided.
I believe this is the most prominent and conspicuous location for the tabernacle in our church, and indeed it was the original location. I am grateful for the many people who have requested this move since I arrived at St. Anne in January. I am also grateful to our parish Pastoral Council for endorsing this move.
A fitting date to enthrone our Eucharistic Lord present in the tabernacle in the center of our church will be the Solemnity of Christ the King, which falls on 23 November. It is my plan to eventually move the statue of St. Anne from the back of the church, to be placed where the tabernacle currently is, with the statue of St. Joseph in the front side entrance on the Calder Street side, moving to replace where the St. Anne statue was.
One final note. The citation from the Code of Canon Law above says that the tabernacle should be “beautifully decorated”. Ours certainly is that, but with the passage of time it has become dull. The cost for replating our tabernacle is approximately $11,000. We Remember. . .
The liturgy of the Church during the month of November is a celebration of the lives of the saints, both those canonized by the church and those who have been a part of our personal lives. The readings call for us to reflect on death, but they also remind us of the hope and anticipation of the second coming. We are preparing for the advent season to come.
A Book of Remembrance has been placed in the sanctuary of the church for you to enter the names of your loved ones who have died. Please take time before or after Mass to come forward and write in the names. All those entered in the Book of Remembrance will be remembered at all the Masses during the month of November during the Prayer of the Faithful. On All Saints Day, the book will be placed near the Baptismal Font and the Paschal Candle where it will remain throughout November.

Sunday, November 2nd at the 9:30 a.m. Mass.
This Mass of Remembrance is held every year at St. Anne Church to remember those of our parish and loved ones of parishioners who have died in the last 12 months. Each of the names of loved ones who died in the last year is called during a candle lighting ceremony during Mass. Those whose funeral services were celebrated here at St. Anne since November of last year will automatically be on the list. You must contact Kristina Knowles in order to have any other loved ones’ names entered on the list. Family members or friends need not to have been a member of St. Anne parish. This weekend’s Gospel is the familiar Thanksgiving Day reading of Jesus healing ten lepers with only one returning to thank Jesus for his efforts. The organ-led Masses will conclude by singing the venerable hymn, Now Thank We All Our God. A hymn of thanksgiving is always appropriate at the end of Mass because of Jesus’ gift through the Eucharist. This week, it is especially appropriate.
The words of this hymn were written by Lutheran pastor Martin Rinkart around 1636. Rinkart served in Eilenburg, Saxony during the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648) which was a deadly conflict largely between Catholics and Protestants in Central Europe. Eilenburg was a walled city and became a refuge during the war, but overcrowding resulted in plague and famine. Rinkart was purportedly the last surviving pastor in the city by 1637 and performed 50 funerals per day. We singa 19th-century translation by Catherine Winkworth.
